SAN LUIS OBISPO - United Cerebral Palsy of San Luis Obispo County has a big project underway and its all in an effort to create jobs for people with disabilities.
The Ranch is a ten acre facility in San Luis Obispo that is being transformed into a community park and garden.
For the past two years United Cerebral Palsy of San Luis Obispo County has been trying to create a place where people with developmental disabilities can work. The Ranch will employ fifteen to twenty people.
Currently trees are being planted and the tall grass is being cut down. Eventually, there will be a community garden and the vegetables grown there will be sold to Slo Veg.
U.C.P. serves about 1400 people, adults and children, with disabilities in the county and organizers say this project is a great way for them to be part of the community. "Kids with autism, this is a great location because sitting in a room doing work is often difficult. Being out in an open area and doing physical work for some kids and young adults with autism is a great job opportunity for them," says U.C.P. Executive Director Mark Shaffer.
U.C.P. will also be working with local 4-H clubs so they can have a petting zoo on the property.
The project just got started, but they hope to open to the community soon. The Ranch is located at the Jewish Community Center in San Luis Obispo off of Foothill Road.
